walking awake
by brent engle

can she hear the laughing in distance
there are children
and she loves them
can she see the couple in market
buying flowers
they are lovers
when she comes home from work tonight
tucks into bed
under dim lamplight
will her thoughts race circles around Jesus and the sheep
and spend a moment thinking of me

does she know that I'm having trouble sleeping
from the headaches
or the heartaches
does she hope that one day she'll run across me in cab ride
or on barstool
when she closes her eyes sometimes
does she reach for my hand
to squeeze when she's scared
will she find me before she's grown cold and grown too lonely
and death doesn't seem so hopeless

is the girl of my dreams
walking awake looking for me
pinch me if she's there
if not let me sleep
let me die alone in my sleep

day by day
you know it gets harder
the world makes it harder to stay awake
day by day
I can see myself getting older
day by day
I'm praying that she's out there
oh, if she's out there I won't ever go to sleep

is the girl of my dreams
walking awake looking for me

is the girl of my dreams
walking awake looking for me
pinch me if she's there
if not let me sleep
let me die alone in my sleep

I can see the leaves fall from the trees
must be November
where's the summer
there's a breeze that would bring a good girl to the ground
and scrape her knees up
is her coat warm
when we walk down the street one day
will we laugh to ourselves how we once were lonely
will our son play catcher for the ball club
and our daughter
be a dreamer like her father
